Chapel Hill Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ) is located just minutes from both downtown Louisville, KY
and New Albany, IN, in the beautiful "knobs" of Floyd
County. Chapel Hill is just a few miles from Huber Orchard
and Winery and Stumler Orchards.
The church has been in
existence since 1866 and the church itself is uniquely shaped as
a cross, with the entrances on the bottom end of the arms of the
cross, pulpit at the head of the cross and pews filling the leg
of the cross.
The Todd Fellowship Hall
was built in 1976 and has been home to countless fellowship dinners
and church activities. Next door to the fellowship hall is
the old Chapel Hill School, an example of the one-room schools that
were common in the area in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
Chapel Hill is a member
of the Disciples of Christ denomination founded by Thomas and Alexander
Campbell and Barton Stone in the mid-1800's.
The Campbells and Stone
believed in the fellowhip of all Christians and the adage "No
creed but Christ, no book but the Bible. Where the Bible speaks,
we speak, where the Bible is silent, we're silent." This
proud tradition of the early Disciples movement is still kept alive
at Chapel Hill today.
